What to Expect During Your USCIS Civics Interview
Official rules and procedures followed by USCIS naturalization officers nationwide.
1It is an Oral Exam
You will not be handed a piece of paper or multiple-choice bubbles. The officer speaks the question aloud in English, and you must respond aloud. You can ask the officer to repeat the question if you did not understand.
260% Passing Standard
You only need to answer 6 questions correctly out of up to 10. As soon as you give 6 correct answers, the officer will immediately move on to the reading and writing tests.
3Multiple Accepted Answers
Most questions have several accepted answers (for example, names of Cabinet positions or First Amendment rights). You generally only need to provide one correct answer unless the question specifies "two".
4State & Current Elected Officials
Questions regarding the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice, your state's Governor, and your U.S. Senators reflect the current active officials at the time of your interview.
